I won a blog award! Isn't this cool!? It's my very first time, mostly due to the fact that no one reads my blog because I never write anything on it. But my online-someday-to-be-in-real-life friend, e. of Ordinary Time tagged me so now I get to play! BTW, if you are looking for a great, down-to-earth, gentle, wise and interesting blog to read, go check it out. She's mama to 9, almost 10, children, several through adoption, and she has two little boys the same age and seemingly of the same personalities as my boys. We have big plans to meet up together someday in person and compare notes.
So, thank you, e! My very first tag, ever!
The rules of the award are: 1) Thank the person who gave you this award (see above), 2) List 7 things people may not know about you, 3) Pass it along to a few other bloggers.
So, here goes. I hope I can think of 7 things that are vaguely interesting and not totally embarrassing.
1) In my head, I am a runner. I always imagine myself being a runner. I like to run. I've taken up running for extremely brief periods of time since I was in high school. I was even on the track team for 3 days. But mostly, this hobby remains in my head.
2) I love rutabega. LOVE it. Love it. Rutabega was a vegetable my grandma always made for holiday dinners. She was a fantastic comfort-food cook. I actually make many of her not-heart-healthy recipes often. Everything had butter in it or on it. Yet there were always at least 3 vegetables on her table, and rutabega was often one of them. Mashed, with salt and pepper and butter. I have one child who loves it as much as I do.
3) I married my high school sweetheart. I was 16 and he was 17 and we were on the math team together. I decided one day that I liked him and was going to have a crush on him. So I did. After 4 months of being "frenemies" he asked me to prom, and the rest is history.
4) I hate gardening. I hate dirt and getting dirty. I like to look at flowers and eat vegetables. I tolerate picking vegetables and I like to can them. But don't make me plant them or weed them.
5) I make really good Indian food. I love to cook. I love Indian food. And since the boys joined our family, I've been learning and practicing and cooking Indian. And if I do say so myself, I think I'm pretty good. I've never fed my Indian cooking to an Indian person, so I guess that would be the definitive judgement, but all 7 of us are dedicated Indian foodies and they seldom say the restaurant is better than mine.
6) I don't like dogs. I'm not afraid of them, I just don't like them. Growing up, there was never a time that we DIDN'T have a dog in our family. I liked our dogs just fine, but we were never a mushy, let-the-dog-lick-your-face and sleep on your bed kind of family. Dogs slept in their dogbed and didn't go on the furniture. Mostly you opened the door and let them out and put food and water in their dish. At least, that was what I did. Maybe my parents were more crazy about them. I just knew they were a lot of work (guess who had poop duty all her teenage years???) So when I grew up, I never felt any need for a dog. I didn't have any desire for the hassle. Except that a few years ago I started wanting a dog. I started looking at the humane society at dogs. And a year ago a puppy walked out of the back room at the humane society and into my heart. Luckily, we were blessed with a perfect dog. Truly perfect. And I like her. I even love her. But I don't let her lick my face and she doesn't go on my furniture. :P
7) I love to drive. I love to drive on long trips. I never get to drive on family trips because Mr. GT gets carsick if he's not driving, but I love to take the kids and take off somewhere. I even had plans to drive to Texas to visit Leslie a couple of summers ago, but something got in the way (don't remember what anymore). Maybe next summer....
And now I have to pass the award on to a few friends. Well, I'm a boring person and I don't read that many blogs. I have about 10 favorites that I read, so I'll give you a couple of my faves... One is Leslie at Recovering Noah. Leslie is the one who organized the trip to SCH we took a few years ago. I love her blog because she is real and she makes me laugh out loud. Actually, she often makes me snort. Another is Nikki at One Tiny Starfish. Nikki is another connection with SCH. She is passionate about humanitarian work around the world. And a third is Jimmie over at Jimmie's Collage. Jimmie is a fellow homeschooler and another gentle soul. She posts tons of great links for homeschooling and has lots of wise advice. She's another online friend I'd love to know in person.
